Natural Ways of Keeping Ants at Bay
Trying to get rid of ants using poisons can be harmful to small children or any pets you may have.
Thankfully, there are many natural, organic products that most people have at home which will keep those pesky ants at bay, or even kill them. If you don’t have any of the following items at home, they’re easy enough to get hold of.
Essential oils
When a forager goes out and finds food, it marks the path from the food to the nest using a pheromone trail. Other ants, then follow this trail straight back to the food. Certain essential oils can be used to interfere with these scents- peppermint, tea tree, clove and lemon essential oils are some of the most effective.
Ant away spray
Pour all of the following ingredients into a small spray bottle-
¼ cup purified water
15 drops peppermint essential oil
7 drops citrus essential oil ( orange, lemon, grapefruit etc)
OR 1-3 drops of clove essential oil.
Shake the bottle, then spray around baseboards, entry points for ants and anywhere you’ve seen some ants. If you’re spraying on a food surface, omit the tea tree oil, and add 15 drops of peppermint oil instead. Repeat every few days until the ants have gone.
Baking soda and powdered sugar
The powdered sugar attracts the ants and the baking soda kills them mix 1 part sugar with 1 part baking soda and then place your mixture in some shallow lids wherever you see ants.
Vinegar
Like with the essential oils, the smell of vinegar repels ants and masks their scent trail. Place ¼ cup of white or apple cider vinegar and ¼ cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle thoroughly, then spray the places where you last saw ants. As well as their (suspected or known point of entry).
Cornmeal
If you’ve a really big ant infestation, you may want to crack open the cornmeal. Using cornmeal won’t just keep ants away, it will kill them.
The ants will see it as food, but they can’t digest it and, as a result, they eventually die after eating it. It doesn’t work as quickly as poison, but it’s definitely effective.
Splenda
Splenda ( an artificial sweetener) is not dangerous to kids, so it’s great to use if you have an ant infestation where children like to congregate. To add to this, it’s also pet friendly, making this a great option if you’ve pets.
Locate where the ants are entering from, and sprinkle some Splenda there. The ants will consume the Splenda, but it will kill them shortly after.
